Former IRFU chief executive Philip Browne, who oversaw Irish rugby’s transition into professionalism and an era of continental success, has died aged 64.

A former international rower and member of Dublin University Boat Club, Browne was appointed president of Connacht Rugby in 1990, before joining the IRFU in 1992 as president.

Browne began his 23-year tenure as chief executive in 1998, overseeing a period of great success and change throughout Irish rugby.

On the international stage, Ireland won four Six Nations titles, three of which were Grand Slams, while Irish provinces claimed seven Investec Champions Cup titles over the period, reaching four more European finals.

Leinster, Munster and Ulster also claimed 13 Celtic League, Pro12 or Pro14 titles, over more than two decades that Browne selflessly gave to Irish rugby.

The second decade of his time leading Irish rugby also saw the move to the Aviva Stadium in 2010, a venue which has become a symbol of sport in Ireland.

Browne stood down in 2021, after managing the IRFU through the Covid-19 pandemic. IRFU chief executive Kevin Potts paid tribute to his predecessor.

Potts said: "Over more than two decades as Chief Executive, he helped build the structures and stability that underpin the success of the game today.

"Everyone in Irish Rugby is deeply saddened by the passing of Philip Browne. The scale of Philip's contribution to Irish rugby cannot be overstated.

"I had the privilege of working alongside Philip for 17 years. He was hugely admired and trusted by everyone he worked with, and he brought kindness and thoughtfulness to everything he did.

"His legacy can be seen in so many areas of the game, including the Aviva Stadium, where he was the key driver behind its redevelopment.

“He was a deeply respected colleague and friend whose impact extended far beyond his role, and he will be greatly missed for many years to come.

"On behalf of the IRFU, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Annemarie, Jack, SallyAnn and Philip’s wider family, friends and former colleagues at this very difficult time."

The British & Irish Lions send sincere condolences to Browne's family and friends.
