Ieuan Evans in the 1993 Nike kit on Tour in New Zealand

Eagle-eyed British & Irish Lions supporters may have noted a special detail in the video announcing a partnership with Nike ahead of the inaugural Lions Women’s Tour.

The video in question showed a young girl watching the 1993 Lions Tour to New Zealand on a television screen, the last Tour on which the Lions were sponsored by the Nike.

But what about the additional nugget? Well, the girl in the video is wearing the original jersey of Lion 616 Ieuan Evans MBE, who is now the Lions Chair.

The 1993 Tour was the second of Evans’ three Tours for the Lions and was a particularly successful one for the Welshman, who returned as the touring side’s top scorer with four tries.

He also played a pivotal role in a famous Lions comeback on that Tour, against the Maori All Blacks. The Lions were 20-0 down at half time but Evans’ try, followed by a key part in leading the counter-attack for the second, helped the tourists earn a 24-20 win.

The 1993 kit remains a favourite among the Lions fanbase. Marc Sheppard was among those to take to Instagram to hail the jersey as 'my favourite Lions kit', while Andrew Steed labelled it 'awesome'. For Sam Baguley, seeing the Nike kit made for a trip down memory lane as she recalled 'amazing memories of the best first holiday abroad without my mum and dad'.

The jersey provided a brilliant link between the heritage of the Lions and the new era that beckons in 2027, with plenty more memories set to be created over the course of a historic Tour.

We would like to thank Ieuan for providing the jersey - and keep your eyes peeled to lionsrugby.com for more news and updates around the Lions Women's Tour.
